Do you daydream of moving to Italy? Are you as drawn to its rich history, delicious food, and the promise of “the sweet life” as we are?
As mobility experts and global citizens ourselves at Lincoln Global Partners, we’ve helped countless non-EU citizens transform their Italian dream (Portuguese and Spanish dreams too) into reality. From the urban centers of Rome and Milan to the Mediterranean Sea coastlines, Italy offers a mixture of heritage, world-class museums, and a slower pace of life that attracts many expats.
And admittedly, just writing this, I’m feeling a little down that I’m not an Italian citizen.
Whether you’re considering a permanent relocation or just an extended period in Italy, the European Union member country provides a lot of opportunity for global citizens and investors. From special tax regimes for high-net-worth individuals to favourable visa requirements for digital nomads and entrepreneurs, Italy can welcome you too with open arms.
Let’s explore why Italy might be your perfect destination and how Lincoln Global Partners can guide you through every step of your journey to Italian residency and even citizenship.
Why Choose Italy?
1. Quality Of Life
History and Nature
Let’s start with the intangible benefits of moving to Italy – Italian quality of life, which is where many expats’ minds first wander when thinking about moving here.
Blending ancient tradition with modern lifestyle, Italy’s rich history spans millennia. From the Vatican City to countless art galleries scattered throughout major cities in Italy, the country arguably serves more as an open-air museum than any other country in the world.
World-class museums house some of humanity’s greatest artistic achievements, while stunning natural and diverse landscapes in the Italian Alps and the Mediterranean Sea coastlines provide year-round opportunities for outdoor enthusiasts and nature lovers.
Culture
Where do we begin with Italian culture?
Life revolves around the celebrated tradition of Italian food and wine, where meal times are sacred occasions. Local communities embrace the concept of “la dolce vita,” prioritizing quality social time with family members and friends over the rushed pace common in North America and Western Europe. This slower pace of life allows residents to appreciate the beautiful surroundings and culture that makes Italy unique.
Climate
Whether you choose to relocate to a city center like Rome or Florence or enjoy the tranquility in Tuscany, Italy offers several different climates – fit for anyone’s tastes. If you enjoy winter landscapes, the Italian Alps are for you. If you prefer a seaside lifestyle, Southern Italy and its many islands are surrounded by various bodies of water.
Each region of the country presents its own character, climate, and culture, allowing expats to choose an environment that matches their preferences.
2. Strategic Benefits
Italian Residency and Citizenship
All right, here are the more tangible benefits of moving to Italy.
Italian citizenship or residency opens doors to countless opportunities within the European Union. As an Italian citizen, you gain access to all EU countries for travel, residence, work, healthcare, and education without additional visa requirements. This freedom of movement throughout European countries is particularly valuable for those seeking global mobility and perks worldwide.
Italy’s healthcare system ranks among the world’s best with comprehensive coverage available to residents through public and private health insurance. Regardless whether your goal is to visit Italy, stay an extended period, or live in Italy permanently, affordable world-class care is a major perk, particularly retirees and families with children.
Additionally, having another residency permit or citizenship in your back pocket is a great diversification tool. Who knows when you’ll have to escape your country? Moving to Italy is a great backup plan.
Access to Europe
An Italian passport provides visa-free access to 180+ countries worldwide. If you’re able to naturalize and become an Italian citizen, you have access to one of the strongest passports in the world.
This mobility advantage, combined with Italy’s location at the center of Europe, makes it an ideal base for international business and travel.
Furthermore, Italian residence visa holders enjoy simplified processes for establishing bank accounts, obtaining an Italian identity card, and accessing other public services not available to tourists. (Learning Italian always helps.) If you’re in Italy on a long stay visa, Italy will only continue to enhance these benefits by attracting talent and investment.
For expats, particularly those moving to Italy from the United states, these advantages make Italy a beautiful place to live and a practical choice for personal enjoyment.
3. Financial Advantages
Tax Regimes
To entrepreneurs and investors wanting to minimize their tax burden, Italy may present some valuable opportunities. For those not living in Italy (i.e. spending more than 6 months per year in the country), you will not become a tax resident or pay tax to the Italian government.
However, if you spend more than half of your year in Italy and create substantial ties to the country, you may become a tax resident and must file taxes. Through its special tax regimes, Italy has two attractive tax programs, including a flat tax of €200,000 per annum on worldwide income for high-net-worth individuals and a separate 7% flat tax rate on foreign pensions and retirement funds for new Italian residents.
Moving to Italy has its financial perks. But if you don’t want to pay taxes in Italy at all, it’s best to avoid tax residency by not living in Italy for 6 months per year in the first place.
Investment and Banking
With permanent residency and eventually citizenship, one has special investment privileges not available to foreigners.
Property investment presents unique opportunities, especially in emerging areas. While property taxes vary by region, some Italian cities offer favorable conditions for real estate investment, with ability to earn both rental income and appreciation when sold.
The process of opening an Italian bank account has been streamlined for foreign residents, providing access to the European banking system and facilitating local financial transactions. For those moving to Italy from the United States or other non-EU countries, the banking integration process has been simplified, requiring only a residence permit and financial means documentation. Digitalization efforts have also vastly improved Italian banking services to meet the international standards you’re accustomed to in your home country.
For non-EU citizens, understanding value added tax (VAT) considerations is crucial for planning business operations or big purchases.
Lincoln Global Partners helps our clients in navigating tax regulations, investments, and banking requirements, making sure you remain compliant not only under Italian law but at home as well.

There are several paths to life in Italy. The ideal route for you and your family depends on your needs and aspirations. Do you want to live in Italy permanently on a permanent residency? Or do you simply want citizenship in the Southern European country? We'll cover a wide range of options available to you. Let's move to Italy!
The Italian Golden Visa Designed for Investors
The Italy Investor Visa, often referred to as the Italian Golden Visa, represents one of the most straightforward paths to Italian residency. This program stands out among European countries for its clear investment thresholds and ability to invest post-application approval.
Those who want to live the Italian dream must indicate in their visa application which investment option they prefer. For those considering the government bonds route, the minimum investment required is €2 million in Italian government bonds, which must be maintained for at least two years. The bond investment option appeals particularly to investors seeking a risk-averse, conservative approach while gaining access to temporary residence permits for themselves and their family.
Investors can also purchase €500,000 in Italian commercial real estate. This is the more popular route under the Golden Visa. Major cities like Rome and Milan typically offer stronger investment potential, though emerging areas may provide better value.
For entrepreneurs, The Golden Visa program also offers an option for investors to earmark €250,000 in an innovative Italian company, which creates Italian jobs and contributes to the Italian economy.
Broadly speaking, all the above investment routes require applicants to demonstrate sufficient financial means beyond their initial investment to support themselves and their family members during their stay in Italy, whether they move to Italy or not. The application process involves submitting comprehensive documentation, including bank statements, medical records, health insurance coverage, and a clear criminal record.
At Lincoln Global Partners, we guide investors through each step of the visa application process, from selecting the appropriate investment route to obtaining the Italian residence permits. After an Investor Visa maintains their investment for five years, they qualify for permanent residence. Then, after five more years of meeting requirements, they can apply for naturalization as a citizen.

Italy recently introduced the temporary resident Digital Nomad Visa to cater to remote workers and entrepreneurs who can demonstrate a foreign income while living in Italy. This visa type requires proof of stable employment or self-employment outside of Italy.

Elective Residence Visa
The Elective Residence Visa stands as a popular choice for retirees and individuals with passive income. This temporary residence permit requires an annual income of at least €31,000 per year (slightly more if applying with a spouse and dependents) without the need to work while living in Italy. Eligible income streams include pensions, investments, or other sources that could support an extended period of stay.

Request A Callback Representative Office Visa
The Self Employment Visa opens doors for entrepreneurs looking to establish or expand their business presence in Italy. This route requires a business plan and proof of financial sustainability.
Similarly, the Representative Office Visa allows foreign companies to open a local branch in Italy and to establish a presence through market exploration, publicity, or research. Local professionals hired by the company are, therefore, eligible for an Italy work visa and permesso di soggiorno (residence permit) during their stay in the country.

The Student Visa pathway allows foreigners to study at an Italian university or local international school while experiencing life in Italy. This option often serves as a stepping stone to other long-term residence.
At Lincoln Global Partners, we don’t process student visas. However, we can refer you to trustworthy legal partners who will cater to your needs.

Traditional work permit options remain available for those with employment offers from an Italian company. This work visa typically requires employer sponsorship and proof of professional qualifications. While we don’t normally recommend international investors and entrepreneurs pursue a local work permit, the Italian government and immigration system offers several other routes to achieve the same goals.

Request A Callback Italian Citizenship Options
While permanent residence offers several privileges, Italian citizenship and one of the strongest travel documents in the world is the holy grail. Unrestricted access to EU countries is priceless.
So how do you get citizenship in Italy?
Citizenship by Descent
The fastest way to obtain Italian citizenship is through your bloodlines. Seriously. Citizenship by descent, known as “jus sanguinis,” allows individuals with Italian ancestors to claim citizenship, provided they can demonstrate an unbroken line of Italian heritage. Italian consulates simply require documentation of your lineage through records like birth certificates, passports, identity documents, and other files.
In less than a year, you can obtain a perfectly valid citizenship and passport with minimal investment required.
Naturalization
Of course, you can also naturalize as an Italian citizen by meeting residency requirements. For non-EU citizens, citizenship requires legal residence (see above for investors visas, self-employment visas, work visas, and other pathways) in the country for ten consecutive years, demonstrating integration into the local community, and speaking Italian at a basic-to-intermediate level.
Marriage to an Italian citizen can expedite this timeline, reducing the residency requirement to two years if living in Italy, or three years if living abroad.
Throughout the naturalization process, applicants must maintain a valid residence permit (permesso di soggiorno) and demonstrate their commitment and ties to Italy. The processing timeframes vary significantly based on the route and local procedures. That’s what we help you navigate – the bureaucracy. Lincoln Global Partners provides comprehensive support in identifying your goals and ideal route, preparing applications, and navigating the requirements of citizenship law.

Request A CallbackLegal Requirements for an Italian Residency Permit (Permesso di Soggiorno)
Getting legal residence in Italy for yourself and your family requires careful attention to the administrative processes. The foundation of legal stay is a permesso di soggiorno (an Italian identity card), which must be applied for within eight days of arriving in Italy and validates your right to stay. Visit your provincial police headquarters (Questura) for more information.
The application process for your residence permit depends on your desired route. It could involve lots of documentation, even including rental contracts and bank statements. You’ll also need to demonstrate private health insurance coverage for the duration of your stay in Italy. Of course, if your chosen residence visa requires investment, you will commit those funds after your application is approved.
We know the process can be complex. So Lincoln Global Partners provides A-to-Z support throughout these administrative procedures.
