A Digital Nomad Visa is a visa type that enables people to reside in a foreign country while working for a foreign company, remotely. Thus, as the phenomenon of the digital nomadism increases, many countries have launched digital nomad visa programs to attract those who work remotely to support the economy of the country without occupying the demand for local employees.
In most cases, digital nomad visas are in form of short term residency permits, valid from 6 months to a few years. It is usually possible to extend the visa, and in some situations this renewal will grant permanent residence status or an opportunity to apply for the citizenship process. Depending on the country’s immigration law, this can take about 5-12 years.
However, the key requirements of the digital nomad visa include a valid employment or self-employment certification, a minimum required income that may differ depending on countries, a valid health insurance and no criminal record. Digital Nomad Visa Requirements
The required documents vary between the country you intend to apply for, but the main and necessary documents for the visa applications for most digital nomad visas are the following:
- Valid passport
- Fill in the Visa application form
- Minimum monthly income requirement proof by bank statements (the sufficient income required for most of the Digital Nomad Visas are listed above)
- Health Insurance (normally that has coverage for a minimum of one year)
- Birth certificate
- Proof of remote work (a work contract or for those that are self-employed proof of self-employment work)
- Pay the Visa fee at the time of the application (please keep in mind the visa fee may vary according to the country you want to apply for)
Digital Nomad Visa Validity and Renewal
The Digital Nomad Visa is typically a temporary stay remote work visa designed for those seeking to live abroad for a designated period. Although there are some key differences, once the validity of this visa expires, applicants are required to apply for a residence permit. This permit extends their stay, allowing them to remain in the country for an additional duration. However, this renewal process ensures that digital nomads have to prove the maintenance of the previously required documents.
Digital Nomad Visa Taxes
Some countries with Digital Nomad Visas have special taxation systems for foreign nationals, however, this is not the case in all countries, and is important to note that by spending 183 days in a country with a residential-based taxation system, will most likely consider you as a tax resident, having tax obligations by the local laws. But stay calm! You won’t have to pay taxes in two different countries. Due to the double taxation agreement, you’ll only pay local taxes or to your home country/the country you are working for.
